Rank the SECw Mascots 1. Reveille 2. Mike 3. Whatever Auburn's Eagle is Named at the Moment 4. Tusk 5. Alabama's Elephant thing 6. State's Bulldog, if it even has a name I have no idea 7. Ole Miss's Racist Old Guy

Honestly I think the Black bear is worst than colonel Reb.

If the university is trying to create a mascot to get rid of race issues, why would they choose ANYTHING with the word BLACK in it? I think that was a horrible PR move by OM. Plus some of my freinds who go to school there say Colonel Reb was biased off a black man.

Spot on!!!

And I'm still waiting on a reason why Colonel Reb is racist. Did he write something racist? Did he take a racist picture? The mascot wore a jersey, shorts, and hat for crying out loud.

Actually, that doesn't really help. The argument that it's not racist revolves around the idea that they made a black guy white rather than allowing their mascot to be black?

I remember reading about the Ole Miss mascot awhile back. Their is one book by Sanseng that references one guy ,Frank Everett, as the source. All articles about the story link back to Sanseng's book.

Even then ,Sanseng, only states
quote:

Blind Jim [Ivy] may have been the model for Colonel Rebel

1)That doesn't sound like affirmative Yes to me
2) Considering all the shite going down at Ole miss at the time it sounds kind of revisionist.

The alternative names for the mascot contest were Massas (As in Slave Masters), Stonewalls, and Confederates. I think you knew What kind of Mascot you were going for from the start. Considering your choices for a Mascot, Why would you model him after a black guy. There are historians that dispute Sanseng version with even better sources.

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Here is a picture of your old football guide. Your mascot looks like a leprechaun. It sounds like Ole Miss fans are trying to talk themselves into believing the story. If you believe you had a mascot honoring a Black Guy, why didn't you make Colonel Reb Black in the first place. Better yet, Why don't you bring back Colonel Reb and make him Black and Blind now. I'm kinda curious how Ole Miss fans would react to that.
