Spurrier's beer ...

I don't want my buddies in here to be misinformed.
This thing about Spurrier's favorite beer being Coors is not exactly correct. He drinks it when he is at events where they are only serving the usual suspects ... Bud, Bud Light, Natty, Coors, etc.
But when he has his druthers, what we always have to have waiting on him for the golf tourneys, for club meetings, when we pick him up from the airport, etc., is Shock Top. That's his favorite beer. At least it has been for a few years now that I know of.
If you are holding a club function he probably will not drink at the function, but he's had a couple of Shock Tops on the way, or in the plane.
If you are going to play golf with Spurrier, you'd better believe someone there has stocked at least one cart with Shock Top ... the colder the better.

He could at least pick Blue Moon and keep it in the Coors family.

I hadn't had a Coors Original in a long time until about a couple of years ago after a league tennis match, someone brought a cooler of them out and it was like a nectar of the gods. Then again, pretty much any beer compared to the usual light suspects can taste that way after a long hot match. I've started drinking Coors once in a while after that, I'll always choose it over Bud Light, Natty Light etc.
Shock Top is pretty good, not a beer I'll actively seek at a grocery store or bar but I won't turn one down. Lately I've been on a Sweetwater 420 kick.

I think I actually saw the HBC drinking a Sweetwater not too long ago. I think that's what it was now that you mention it. I think Chip may have had some that day or something.

Shock Top is an ale, unless I am mistaken.

It's dry, podner. And it is the only beer I would drink with a regular meal.
But it will knock one on arse. I found that out in Prague. Little higher alcohol content.

A few times a year. It used to be fun, now I can take it or leave it. He's an okay guy, very guarded. It's usually at fund raisers or club meetings or around the golf course. He's got his little circle and no one is getting-in except a select few for the real socializing stuff. I've picked him up from the airport to bring him to club meetings, golfed a few holes with him here and there. I'm around him enough to know what's going-on but I am not the type to try to work my way into his inner circle. I'm not sure I like him enough to really want to be social with him. I respect him for what he does, respect him for his accomplishments, but at my age I have very few heros in my life and I reserve those for soldiers, players like Lattimore, my Dad who is elderly and in his late 80s but still living, older brothers, etc. Coaches like Spurrier are rock stars with huge egos ... but that's never appealed to me.
I was a huge fan and friend of both Dietzel and Carlen, went to both of their funerals. Morrison, on the other hand, he was more like Spurrier in a lot of ways. Never trusted Brad Scott - never bought into his good ole boy Schick. I liked Lou just fine, he was just a good guy and he loved South Carolina, still does. He and I were on a first name basis and I actually admired him quite a bit. Couldn't stand Skip though. A master bullshitter if ever there was one IMHO - I just avoided the hell out of him at all costs.
What Spurrier is to be most respected for, IMHO, is his family. He's done a good job, Jerri and he have really done well raising their family. I'm very happy they are part of our Gamecock family now ... and they are, moreso than Florida IMHO.
Don't get me wrong. I completely understand why Spurrier is so guarded. There are a lot of leeches out there who would love to get close to him. He has to be the way he is. And he is social enough, he knows his role, but I've witnessed him being a bit of an arse at times too. No problems, I hope he just keeps winning and gets us over the big hump. He's a very special personality and coach.
