I believe you are doing it correctly.

from a purely sports perspective being an Alabama fan is clearly the more enjoyable and easier ride

It was just a gravestone.
Nothing more than a historic landmark, amiright?

But it boils down to a religious-like belief in Alabama and a social awkwardness and lack of tact. It may not lead to tree killing, but it leads to some windsuit wearing Bama fan tracking down your wife from across a restaurant for having an Auburn keychain to tell her about how bad Bama is gonna beat that arse this year.
I'm only halfway through the thread, but... WINNER.
fricking winner, dude... take home the trophy.

Again, possibly, but not 100% verifiable by anything provided.
As I've stated a million times now, it really isn't a big enough difference to be statistically relevant.
My anecdotal evidence in support of your view is this: up until only recently, AU had a larger enrollment than UA. And, due to the large number of science/technical/engineering grads from that larger enrollment, many of those grads left the state and got jobs at centers of high-tech nationwide. In much greater frequency than UA grads. Ergo, the AU brand was spread in many other areas OTHER than merely *football*.
So, yeah, I agree with you. Up until Saban's most recent (and very impressive) championship run, you almost *never* saw UA gear in Atlanta. But AU gear was all over.
At all of my Navy stops during my service years, AU gear was common to see, not UA (excepting Pensacola ).
I can see your point easily being true from a rational POV.

Yep I ran into way more Auburn fans than I expected in London
I met some San Diego State girls in Villefranch-sur-Mer, France.
