Someone added this is ketchum's wikipage

quote:

In 2014, Ketchum was embroiled in a controversy when he implied a crime in College Station had been committed by a specific member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Football team, on Twitter.[2] Ketchum's implications fueled rumors on message boards and social media, implicating the player by name, which prompted the Bryan Police Department to break normal protocol and comment on an ongoing investigation in order to reveal that the player Ketchum implicated was not in town when the crime was committed.[3] Ketchum admitted on his message board, Orangebloods.com, that he had based his assumption off of unsubstantiated comments that had been made by users on that same message board. Ketchum has also stated that "nearly 20-percent" of the Texas A&M football program was "behind bars", which also was later proven to be inaccurate.

I think Hamm handled this poorly. Particularly in letting the speculation run rampant in the original thread. But if someone actually did pick Speedy out of a police lineup or picture book, as is what appears to be alleged, that's news. He went with it too early, without getting the whole story, but I seriously doubt it was a story he WANTED to cover. We're not talking about the normal press, which takes an adversarial position or watchdog (or flatters itself as such). Hamm's business model rewards good news, not bad.

Hamm should have done more checking, and let the story develop more, but if things were already leaking on the Geaux247 side, it's not completely incomprehensible that he could feel the need to say something about the story. Unfortunately, the way he chose to address the issue was very poor, but there was no malice or ill will.
