Texas:--University of Texas Austin, Bubbas y'all better check the entrance requirements, ballplayers aside.
Louisiana:LSU, probably the best college press in the United States. When I was thinking of going to grad school (history, and I didn't go)--It came down to North Carolina or LSU.
Georgia:Emory, though Georgia and Tech are heavy hitters academically.
Missouri: Mizzou is great, as is Washington University.
South Carolina:Depends on what one is looking for. Furman for those planning on medical school. But neither USC nor Clemson are bad.
Florida:University of Florida. Yankee money and the Bull Gators have made it a showplace for learning. it is a super school.
Alabama:Auburn Before retiring, I hired three of their grads. Super kids. Before our oldest got into medical school, it was down to Auburn or Michigan for microbiology as a second choice. Auburn is that good.
Mississippi:Ole Miss or State.
Tennessee:Vanderbilt
Kentucky Kentucky
Arkansas:I would have left this state out except businesses have pumped some big bucks into the University of Arkansas. And it has made huge leaps in the past 20 years.
