You do know message boards pre-date the internet right...
So does fantasy football/baseball....
My cousin (tech nerd) had six card tables in his parents basement set up just for his fantasy baseball which he did with paper and pencil...

Your talking about Bulletin Board Systems 
but yeah.they had operators and you had to pay and I guess you could say that forums got their roots from them but.......they were pretty pedestrian and nothing like what we have now...
did you know that mr. John Draper used a captain crunch whistle to hack these phone systems...it was called Phreaking...to create specific audio frequencies which essentially let him make phone calls,,long distance for free...
