That hurdle may be more about the perception of the program than actual wins, but in my book that is the next hurdle.
I completely agree with this. It most definitely is the next hurdle along with taking the next step on the field. (Conference championship or national title game.)
Im not sure the two are not mutually exclusive.

I feel like we've begun getting the top tier recruits. It doesn't get any higher than DGB. Sheldon Richardson was top tier. It's just not frequent enough to lose the stigma. The next step for Mizzou is to increase the frequency.
This I would agree with.

I agree. i guess my previous post made it sound like I accept being a "2nd tier" program. I just kind of accept the process if that makes sense. Things are changing and it takes time. My original point was that IF we are going to lose guys in state this year that these two would have as little an impact as possible given how Mizzou recruits these two positions nationally.
Naw, I just didn't want it to come off like I thought the world was coming to an end because we didn't land Hentges. Obviously not the case. Rather, was explaining that that is what is needed IMO to reach the next hurdle and it's not so much because of any one player because there will always be other kids but because of that would mean that the perception of the program has reached a new height.

Yea, I hear you. I have thought about this plenty my friend, believe me, plenty. I think it come down to a culture that was planted in the early 70's by the administration that de-emphasized athletics on the whole. I mean, think about that, its two whole generations that gave zero fricks about Mizzou athletics outside of basketball. Thats an incredibly difficult hole to climb from. Im 40 reedus so I can remember the height of the bleak years and maybe its just that perspective of seeing the climb back, and believe me there is a substantial climb back. It also may speak to my loyalty to Pinkel. We are still in a precarious position, we do not have the prestige to make a bad hire after Gary and expect to rebound 2-3 years later. Im nervous, its been rough going as a Mizzou fan. I want things to change for the better as much as the next guy.
45 here and I think those years are what shape my feelings on it as well. DO NOT WANT to see the program fall back into those years, even if it's through complacency. Things have certainly changed for the better though havent they since the 80's? I mean here I am talking about wanting Mizzou to be perceived as a top tier program from in state kids when there was a day when it was the place you went when no one else offered you.

Reese RS Freshman
Blanton Freshman
Daniel Imatorbhebhe the year after.
Missing anyone?

I didn't expect to get him, not bothered by it.

Mizzou will never be elite because we can't keep our own. Lock, Hentges, and Ofadile as a package would've been a game changer. Instead Mizzou will do continue to try to get the best 2nd tier guys from talent rich states. Pretty much this. It perpetuates the perception in state that Mizzou is a 2nd tier program. Until the top in state kids view Mizzou as a destination school, we won't quite get over the next hump. And no, I'm not saying we're going to suck. We'll continue to be competitive from time to time, but if actually winning that game in Atlanta means anything, we have got to lock down whoever it is we pursue from within our own state.
Nobody locks everyone down. Nobody.
Losing a blocking TE likely won't be the difference between winning and losing

We have Ray at TE as well.

Hey maybe he will be back. Kent Taylor was the #1 rated Tight End who went to Florida and then transferred to Kansas. So anything is possible. But we are stocked with young, athletic tight ends, so I can see why going somewhere else is attractive.

I actually looked in to this a few years back when our fans were melting down over not landing all of our instate kids.
I looked at Arkansas, LSU and Nebraksa at the time because they were all the only Big 5 BCS schools in their state with fiercly, loyal fanbases.
I think it was over like an 8 year period but they all had similar numbers. They all landed about 78% of instate kids that they offered. I think that is a fair number to expect for schools like ours that are the only game in town. No one is going to land everyone in this day and age of every game being televised but if you can land about 7-8 out of 10 then you are doing pretty solid.

Mizzou's Numbers
2015: Not done yet, but of the top 10, offered 9. Got commits from 3.
2014: Of the top 10, offered 9. Got commits from 2.
2013: Of the top 10, offered 10. Got commits from 6. Interesting though that from this 6, 2 didn't qualify, 1 quit before the season started, and 1 is now boing to BYU.
2012: Of the top 10, offered 9. Got commits from 3.
Was using 247 when pulling the top 10's and offers. I'll try to see what the numbers for the whole class to see if it gets better for Mizzou because without getting the calculator out, it sounds like we're hitting on about 33%

Sucks, but can't be mad about losing kids to Alabama.
I love Mizzou and I'd probably guide my kid to Bama over Mizzou if they had the opportunity, at this point.
Bama is the pinnacle right now and it's nearly unprecedented.

The problem with Bama is you could be a starter and never start there because of another 4 or 5 star player. Then again I can't think of a TE that has come out of Bama recently.

Absolutely correct. These kids have been the best they've ever played against for most of their lives though. Don't think most go into a situation thinking they can't win the job.
Fear of the competition isn't a good trait to have either.

Yea I can't fault a kid for going to Bama if he thinks his position/play style doesn't translate well to our team. Look at Andrew Jones as an example, not a TE/WR hybrid and could have played more at so many schools.
The nice thing is we have been able to identify and bring in a good number of the actual difference makers from in state. Not long ago Gabbert/Richardson, recently Boehm/DGB/Abbington and now Lock/Strong/etc.
We need to string together some years of success, repeating last season's win # would be a good start. Hell most of these kids now where in diapers when Brad Smith was playing.

I don't think wanting to play and giving yourself a better shot at contributing is a fear of the competition. I also don't think Mizzou is worried about TE.

I just don't ever remember seeing a TE on the highlight reel for bama.....usually it's the RB,WR, or pic 6.
