In general, the other major conferences don't have to deal with this issue.
This is the key point!
In addition to the 4 yearly games
Florida vs Florida State
Georgia vs Georgia Tech
South Carolina vs Clemson
Kentucky vs Louisville
Many of the AC and SEC teams have strong "secondary" games.
ACC teams with 20+ games with SEC foes :
Clemson : 63 games vs Georgia and 49 games with Auburn,
Duke : 44 games vs South Carolina and 29 games vs Tennessee
Georgia Tech : as a former SEC they have long histories with most SEC schools
Miami : 55 games vs Florida
North Carolina : 30 games vs Georgia, 32 games with Tennessee, and 56 vs South Carolina
NC State : 57 games vs South Carolina
Virginia : 34 games vs South Carolina and 21 games vs Vanderbilt
Wake Forest : 56 games vs South Carolina
Virginia Tech : 20 games vs Kentucky and 20 games vs South Carolina

As has been mentioned, both conferences are talking about each team scheduling one team from the other conference each year. Would you prefer a permanent partner or have the teams rotate? The Ky, SC, Ga and Fla teams would likely prefer the permanent partner structure with the rest preferring a rotating schedule.
My hunch is that no SEC team would want to be permanently paired with Pitt, Syracuse or BC unless there was some recruiting advantage (unlikely) for the school. Otherwise, all the remaining schools in both conferences are in the greater southeast.
