Saying very few sidewalk fans is probably misleading.

Auburn is a pretty prominent athletic school, so we have a good sized bandwagon.

But practically, it just won't be as big as schools that either don't share a state or dominate their state. Moreover, Auburn's exposure has traditionally been lower than its counterparts, and thus "getting into" Auburn football is more of a challenge. Growing up in Georgia, had I not been around a bunch of alums at my church, it wouldn't have occurred to me with Tech and UGA in the same state.

This is admittedly circumstantial, but I think the statistics would back that practical conclusion up, if they were available.
