i agree with this statement. but people who network for a living should never say things like this. I hope you don't say things like this in public, as it will discredit you amongst your peers.

fwiw I'm in the 'networking business' as well. The key to good networking is for people to never know you're trying to network.

For what its worth the only network I talk about often is the Aggie one, because it has given me much more than a job in my life.....

Thank you cas4t, I appreciate that coming from you.

As a NOLA native the whole Aggie arrogance thing doesn't come naturally to me but when I look back at threads like this I feel like I have come a long way.

Sure sure. We certainly aren't getting to the point where we are like China and only the best friend of the son of the party leader is even offered the job.

But given our current economic climate, with so many good candidates in hiring pool the easiest way to stand out is a personal reference from an internal connection.

I don't think anyone incompetent can have success on networking alone, but your network can open doors of opportunity that other people don't have access to.

But you knew that, I just type a lot by default so frick me...
