It is like me going into a store and saying "I really like peanuts, I am a huge peanut fan, so I am just going to take a few peanuts." Sure a few nuts won't make the store go bankrupt or hit the bottom line, but it is the principle of it that matters- those are not my goddamn nuts! Not one, not a few, not any. Not until I pay, which in my analogy is becoming a real stakeholder in the university.

For a sidewalk fan, it is not their goddamn brand to do with what they want. It is the brand of the university and its stakeholders aka the alums.

I would argue that Vandy sidewalkers should be mostly exempt from this argument. We paid our dues to the brand by suffering with them. I moved around between KY and TN when I was younger, so I was exposed to lots of UT and UK fans. A lot of them had an elitist attitude since my family didn't cheer for either (dad attended Cincy and mom attended small college with no real care for sports). Does that mean we have no right to cheer for anyone except the Bearcats?

Vandy was the local team when we moved to Nashville. Frankly, they weren't good, but I enjoyed going to games. Naturally, I became a fan. Yes, I'm a sidewalker. I couldn't get into Vandy. I'm actually attending Auburn. I've been to 2 basketball games (both in Auburn) and a football game. All 3 times I was in black and gold.

Now tell me, which sports brand do I represent?

Is this serious? It is bandwagon fans and not even close. There is nothing wrong with sidewalk fans and every school in the SEC owes their popularity to them. None of us would survive on alumni alone.

The issue is uninformed and/or stupid sidewalk fans. There are plenty of uninformed and/or stupid alumni though. Bandwagon too. It is the stupid jackass fans that are worse than any others, whether they be sidewalk, bandwagon or an actually alumnus.

Well obviously teams with less success have fewer sidewalk fans. In many ways the number of sidewalk fans is a measure of success.

I don't know if I can exempt you though with Vandy being not bad recently and Tenn being a trainwreck.

You obviously are representing the Vandy brand in action, but if you are attending Auburn the value of the Auburn brand is what your future will depend on.

How long do you think a sport or a school would last without sidewalk fans? I mean, bandwagon fans buy merchandise and go to games when a team is winning, then disappear when things get tough. Sidewalk fans usually stick with one team, going to games, watching on TV and buying merchandise in good times and bad.

And you think a future engineering employer would judge an employee based upon the stupid actions of a sports fan associated with Auburn? That is just about the only real value of brand association. It's possible you just care too much what others think of you?

No, not unless they are the stupid fan.

There is also a social value associated with it.

In a time when who you know gets you further than what you know, I don't think you can care enough about what others think of you. Your network is your net worth....

I never realized how much of a douche you are

i agree with this statement. but people who network for a living should never say things like this. I hope you don't say things like this in public, as it will discredit you amongst your peers.

fwiw I'm in the 'networking business' as well. The key to good networking is for people to never know you're trying to network.

This is very true. I should have added "based upon your fandom" to my comment about caring too much. I just don't think stupid sports fans devalue my future degree or networking ability at any appreciable level. 1 public idiot in a 4 year graduating group over 2000 is like throwing a rock in the ocean.

I do business from Virginia to Texas. Most of my clients know where my fandom lies, and it has played 0 role.

People who try to make a living off of networking are not viewed as professionals in my business. There has to be a combination of relationship building skills and knowledge.

That's my point. Stupid fans have not hurt the LSU brand. Their actions only affect media and message board comments. There is no real, tangible degradation to the "brand".

Its ok, I forgive you. My Saint's fandom must have masked it a little bit.

Thank you for the life advice! Get something real out of tRant today.

For what its worth the only network I talk about often is the Aggie one, because it has given me much more than a job in my life.....

you think much too highly of yourself

Thank you cas4t, I appreciate that coming from you.

As a NOLA native the whole Aggie arrogance thing doesn't come naturally to me but when I look back at threads like this I feel like I have come a long way.

Sure sure. We certainly aren't getting to the point where we are like China and only the best friend of the son of the party leader is even offered the job.

But given our current economic climate, with so many good candidates in hiring pool the easiest way to stand out is a personal reference from an internal connection.

I don't think anyone incompetent can have success on networking alone, but your network can open doors of opportunity that other people don't have access to.

But you knew that, I just type a lot by default so frick me...

Maybe, maybe not. As I said, if the actions of a fan cause one talented child to go elsewhere it harms your institution.

You are 100% correct that the actions of a fan won't determine YOUR job offer or a career. But personally my identity as an Aggie is tied to much more than my career.
