Straw would have loved the late 1950s and early 60s when SEC teams punted on their third down a lot if they weren't pass their 50 yd line or quick kicked...qbs who could punt were valued.
Spurrier punted a lot more than most realize. He shared the punting with Hal Seymour who punted barefoot back in those days and was quite good.
A dozen or more passes thrown in a game was considered fairly wide open.
Special teams wins a lot of games or loses them. It is very important to play field position and a good punter who can back up your opponent is worth a lot. Starting field position for series tells a lot. You average starting from your 25 yd line and the other team starts out averaging at their own 45 yd line can spell doom if both teams are almost equal and sometimes even when they are not.
