The key word is "ability". I don't think he meant Flynn had comparable statistics to JFF.

Remember Flynn only played one season - his Senior season, because he played behind Russell.
And in that one season, he had over 3000 yards total offense. He had a better supporting cast of skill players than JFF did.

JFF played two seasons and was practically A&M's entire offense.

Oh, and Flynn won a national championship in his one year, though he didn't win the Heisman. JFF clearly deserved that.
