At the end of the season, the SEC had 3 teams in the Top 15: Auburn, Georgia, and Tennessee. And LSU was #16.

The Big 12 had only 2 teams in the Top 15: Oklahoma and Texas.

I'm not sure it's clear-cut. But I think there's an argument to be made that the SEC was better than the Big 12 overall in 2004.

The SEC East Champ lost to a 6-6 Notre Dame.
Who was the biggest other team from the West? The same team that beat Oregon State at home in overtime by 1 point? A 7-5 Oregon State team at that.
