But what constitutes a "small state"? South Carolina has the same population as Alabama at near 5 million. Tennessee is a bit larger at 6.4 million. Meanwhile, Mississippi is roughly 2.7 million.

Small as in "produces less aggregate football talent than Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas."
