I grew up in country and I let non rattlesnakes live.

This one was about 3.5 foot and is where my kids play (or will when I mow)

Not really scared of snakes, because my brother had a red tailed boa, but I've never had to kill a snake at our house.

However, spiders are a different deal. If they're over the size of a quarter, I scream and have my husband come and kill them.

Here is the likely reason you had a 3.5 foot snake in your back yard. You may have roof rats and not even know it but a snake certainly would.

I wish people had as visceral a reaction to rats as they do to snakes. Rats will attack sleeping babies, they carry disease and they destroy property. Snakes are one of our allies in keeping them under control. I hope you'll consider that the next time you encounter one.
