So it sounds to me like you're saying conference decisions should be based on what's "cheapest" for the fans.
If that's the case, indeed, Atlanta makes sense for many who live in the "SEC footprint."

The cheaper the cost - for basketball especially - means the better attendance. Can you see 120,000 Texas A&M fans traveling to a basketball game? If so, great and make a case for Houston or Orlando but if not drop your argument. Unless schools travel well like UK and UT then SEC should cater to the folks who actually show up and make the venue look filled on TV. Why do you think I harp on attendance numbers all the time?

The biggest selling point of the SEC is the atmosphere you see on TV. In football at least half the conference brings crowds that look good on TV. In basketball it is pretty much just 2 schools.

Football you have a week to get tickets if the conference comes down to the last week of the season.

Basketball is the same, and most folks really attend the semi's and final.

Easier to redistribute just tickets in a week than hotel and plane expenses.

Lets say they put the M or W basketball tournament in Houston. Do you really think it will be well attended by UK and UT? Like it or not, you cater to the schools that can bring the most fans. Simple economics.
