The NIT used to be a really big deal, not so much anymore.

That's what I was thinking, probably from back when the NCAA Tournament was much smaller. You'd have some really incredible teams in the NIT.

In 1973 (in regards to the banner pic up above), the NCAA tournament only allowed 22-25 teams. That particular team went 25-8, 3 of which were to 27-0 NC State. Two of those losses to NC State were by 4 or less. Another was in the actual NIT (they played a loser's bracket game back then). One was in the ACC Tournament (in OT), meaning that they were 22-2 outside of post season and NC State games.

The amount of teams eligible and the amount of teams that make either the NCAA or NIT is less than half of the amount of FBS teams who make a bowl game.

Football programs will put a Liberty Bowl trophy in the case, the NIT isn't any different than a low level bowl.

Now a NIT Championship is worthy of a banner, very few teams have won either the NCAAs or NIT, even fewer have won both.

NIT appearances, elite 8, final 4 banners are completely different to a championship banner.
