They sucked because the ncaa actually punished them for buying all their players.

No surprise. Bama tradition.

Thank You Saban & Staff
Amazing job they've done since Saban's arrival. Between 1997- 2006 Bama had a few tough spells and totally crapped the bed every 3rd year, especially against rivals. Thankfully things got back on track because it stunk having to accumulate enough depth every 3rd year to compete (Win 10 games) That still wasn't enough depth needed to win anything though, but coaching or depth isn't a huge problem anymore. Hopefully that awesome trend continues....

1996-2006 Bama
1996 --- 10-3
1997 --- 4-7
1998 --- 7-5
1999 --- 10-3
2000 --- 3-8
2001 --- 7-5
2002 --- 10-3
2003 --- 4-9
2004 --- 6-6
2005 --- 10-2
2006 --- 6-7

Great line play on both sides of the ball, good depth, and good coaching is needed to win the SEC. Combine this with a historically great football program, and magic like below can happen.

Bama's run lately with Saban & Staff
2008 --- 12-2
2009 --- 14-0 BCS Title
2010 --- 10-3
2011 --- 12-1 BCS Title
2012 --- 13-1 BCS Title
2013 --- 11-2

It's amazing what good depth & coaching can do
Well...... it's just common sense really
