We do need to give them an allowance of maybe $25/$30 a week for movies, burgers, or pizza on a date or with a group of friends.
You evidently have no contact with the real world and the cost to two hamburgers, fries and two cokes, gas for the car and the price of a picture show, not to mention going to a club.
I think failure to address the issue head on is to ask for corrupt system we have now, encouraging young people to lie and cheat.
yes I think they need a stipend probably in the neighbor hood of $100/week. I have no knowledge of the actual amount of legitimate cash they are now currently allotted. If they are dependent on their families for such cash then I think they need a stipend.

I also was a student-athlete, and believe there should be a small stipend to cover costs of living. Not everyone (most don't, actually aside from football and basketball) gets a full ride and there are walk-on's who don't get anything aside from some practice gear. Yet they have the same obligations as the guys who do.
Example, one of my good friends started as a walk on and eventually received a 20% scholarship. In addition to a full load of classes and 20 hrs a week of practice, he was working as many as 3 part time jobs just to cover living expenses. Also needed a hefty loan to cover the rest of his tuition. Oh yeah... he was also an All-American and an SEC champion in his sport. There are actually many student-athletes in similar situations - they should absolutely get a stipend.
