True freshman offensive lineman Braden Smith will get an early opportunity to show he’s ready to play when Auburn opens preseason camp in early August.
Offensive line coach J.B. Grimes says Smith, from Olathe, Kan., is no normal freshman. He stands 6-foot-6, weighs 305 pounds and bench presses more than 600 pounds.
“We have to find out very quickly about Braden,” Grimes said. I think that kid has the ability to play. I’ve watched the way he runs and bends and how strong he is. We have to figure out whether he’s going to play or not.”
The first question for Grimes to answer will be if Smith is ready to play at a high level. The next question for Grimes to answer will be if Smith will play enough to make it worthwhile.
“I don’t think you run him out there for 10 snaps and blow a redshirt season, but on the other hand, he may be like Greg Robinson. He might be one of those guys that, if you redshirt him, he plays two seasons and he’s done anyway. That remains to be seen.”
Robinson, an All-America left tackle season, was chosen by the St. Louis Rams with the second pick in the NFL draft.
