People don't seem to understand the benefits of run blocking in the first half of games - even if you're not gaining a bunch of yards. If your defense can keep the score close, opposing defense get REAL tired of defending the run by the 4th quarter. That's what happened in the first game vs Alabama. The problem was, Saban had his team ready for it in the BCSCG. LSU just could hold the ball long enough in the 1st half to hit Bama's D. The problem in the BCSCG wasn't LSU's offense, it was LSU's defense in the 1st half not giving the ball back to the run blocking offense enough. LSU allowed Bama too many 1st downs and therefore too much TOP in the 1st half to make an impact run blocking.
I don't understand how anyone could argue this point of view. The offense failed to generate first downs and take pressure off the defense. The defense held up valiantly well into the third quarter in spite of zero support from the offense.
Cross the 50 yard line on offense and then complain about the defense. Any other team in the top half of the SEC would have performed better on offense against Bama than LSU did that day.

That happened in several games in 2011. The difference was that the opponents' offenses didn't hold the ball very long in the first half. Therefore, our offensive got more opportunity to beat the shite out of their defense so that by the 4th qtr, their defenses were done. In the first game with Alabama the strategy worked, think about the OT when LSU's oline was starting to dominate.
Our HC was an OL. Think about his perspective on the game. He wants to run block. He wants to hit people in the mouth. He wants to lay people out so that towards the end of the game the opponent's defense has quit.
