Winning isn't enough for gumps. You want the affirmation of others to support your mantra that this one thing (college football) gives meaning to your otherwise mundane life. I guess if I lived in a state with no other distractions - no NFL, NBA, MLB, etc... I could see totally obsessing on that one thing that you feel provides validation. But, its still kinda pathetic.

As if this is supposed to be some derogatory term. I've never understand why it's been used. The dude taught Elvis how to dance, he was an All-American at Alabama in the early-60s, he won the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, he beat the communists at ping-pong, and blew the lid wide open on Watergate. He ran across America multiple times and is a multi-billionaire to boot.

How un-insulting it is to call someone a "gump". If anything it just affirms how great we are.
