T-shirt fans = $$$.

not nearly as much as real fans do.

And the more popular the school is, the larger the applicant pool from which to select new students.

not in texas state schools where all the universities attendances are maxed anyway.

Well, I have two degrees from A&M, so I don't think I qualify as a t-shirt fan.

Having t-shirt fans does not preclude a school from having "real" fans (however you're defining it)

First, we aren't maxed out. Not even close. This past year, I believe we jumped about 3,000 in enrollment, and are now the largest school in Texas. Since we have a ton of available land, the plans are to keep expanding.

Second, whether we're "maxed out" is irrelevant. Being more popular means we have more to choose from for the incoming students. Admitting better applicants will raise the quality of the student body.

First off, tshirt fans do = $$$. They buy stuff. They watch the games. They even buy tickets. Are they as important as alums? Of course not, but they matter. A&M already has a ton of die hards and a huge alumni base.

Second, popularity does affect applications. A&M went up from 28k to 34k by joining the SEC. What it doesn't affect is enrollment, though A&M is growing and plans on exceeding 60k soon (we are at 53k in College Station as of now).

Third, the fact that so many people have moved to Texas in the last decade and are moving here at a rate of 500k per year is all the more reason this is important. A lot of those people may have supported Texas simply because "Well, we moved to Texas so I guess we should root for the Longhorns". Seeing A&M and what we are about gives them another choice and A&M is winning over a lot of them. Some will stay and some will go but A&M is winning them over at a rapid rate.

Finally, the bigger thing that is happening is more and more people are now fans of both A&M and Texas because they are both Texas schools and they no longer play each other. If you don't have a preference either way you don't have to "choose". This affect is very positive for A&M and negative for Texas.
