I think the correct answer is that more people WANT to go to Alabama than they do Auburn. There's nothing wrong with that.

I've never understood the Auburn mindset. "We're special because fewer people want to go here."

And why do more want to go to Alabama? Is it because there are more popular majors that are available? A quick check of the undergrad majors offered by both schools will show that each school offers programs that the other doesn't.

Alabama has an outstanding law school...according to the Princeton Review even more selective than Vanderbilt. Auburn doesn't even have a law school. So if you live in Alabama and want to go into law, where are you more likely to go for your pre-law undergrad program...Alabama, or a university that doesn't even have a law school?
