Can we take a moment to discuss wtf is going on with MD28?

In nine games he has 1384 yards from scrimmage (third most in the country, btw). 1058 rushing and 326 receiving. He's done that in 195 plays for an average of 7.1 per.

Looking back three years. Marcus Lattimore, in his best season (due to injuries in his second and third year, granted), had 1609 yards in 13 games. 1197 rushing and 412 receiving. He was averaging 5.8 per play.

If Davis continues with his 158 yard average per game he'll add nearly another 800 yards to his total. But barring some monster scoring games he will not catch Lattimore's 19 TDs that season.

I thought it would take a while for us to find someone to fill Lattimore's shoes, but Davis is not only filling them, he's making them his own. Honestly before the season started I was in the Wild's camp. But I have been pleasantly surprised with what Davis has given us in the running game.

Granted, the team around Davis is demonstrably better than what Lattimore was toting on his back. He has a more than capable QB who not only shoulders his own pressure, but carries the team in his own right. He has a line that is both talented and experienced. And the rest of the offense is a marked improvement.

But Davis is taking all those advantages and is running away with them. And we still have another year of this to look forward to!!

He has been impressive this year for sure. I've been surprised by his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. That catch down the sideline yesterday was one a lot of wide receivers couldn't make.

Remember Lattimore missed 2 and a half games in 2010 due to injury though

Oh, I know. Which is why I was comparing their best years to date. It's a little off even then because Latty's was his true Freshman year versus Davis' true Sophomore. And I think the offense around Davis is vastly better than what Lattimore was saddled with.

I just wasn't expecting this so soon. I mean the guys we've recruited were bound to show out eventually, but the next season? That was a gift.

Marcus' best year of production was the 2011 season, until he suffered his first ACL injury however. He was averaging 116.9 ypg through 7 games (818 net rushing yds), and already scored 10 rushing TDs by then (Mike has 10 through 9 games). Marcus also had 182 receiving yds by then, giving him 1,000 total yds from scrimmage, or 142.9 total ypg. Mike is still averaging better than that, slightly...

You're right about Davis ... he's taking full advantage of his opportunities.

We've been very fortunate to have back-to-back RBs of their caliber.

I think we have another in waiting in David Williams. I'm just so darn happy we made it this far without having to pull Williams' redshirt.

Davis has a real shot at putting 1400 on the board this year. If he can do close to that next year then he'll go early. We'll still have Wilds, plus I think Joe Blue is still gonna carry the ball some. And we'll have Williams to be the main guy.

In the meantime it's a pleasure getting to watch Davis do his thing. He's better than his brother IMHO.

Lattimore and Davis are both awesome. Davis is benefiting from having a better OL than Lattimore had his first year.

Davis will beat Lattimore's best season this year. This bye week will help him "heal" even though he said he doesn't have an injury.

This.

I was also in Wilds camp at beginning of season. MD28 has been a monster on the gridiron, but the difference between him and Latti IMHO was th OL. ML21 broke multiple tackles in the backfield as soon as he got the ball to go on and get those yards, reference UGA/Florida games. He dominated out traditional east foes and made them groan to see us on the schedule.
After this year those same teams will do so again seeing #28 and #22 coming at them. And they said we would fall off after Latti left.
