As long as the prospect can't back out at the last minute it's fine. But if the school and student aren't protected it isn't worth anything.

I'm more of the opinion that the school doesn't need protecting. The schools hold the vast majority of the power in the situation. If this change keeps kids from getting squeezed out of a class after committing early, I'm all for it. If the school thinks they may not want a kid in the end, they don't have to sign the scholarship papers.

Fans all want kids to sign and be locked in really early because it helps their school. My thinking is that these prospects should be given every opportunity to make the right decision. It's a HUGE life decision.

FTR- I'm not advocating committing early with the intention of shopping around. Sometimes though, circumstances arise that necessitate it. It would be a shame for a kid to not be able to make the right decision because he was locked in in August.
