Malco Theatres has acquired the closed 10-screen movie theatre and outdoor amphitheater in the Oxford Commons development at the corner of Sisk Avenue and Highway 7 in Oxford, MS. Malco will also acquire adjacent property from Kenlan Development Company in order to double the size of the building, converting it to a Family Entertainment Center including the theatre and amphitheater, a 26-lane bowling center with a boutique bowling area, a bar and restaurant, birthday party and event rooms, and a redemption game area featuring a laser maze and bumper cars. The theatre will be remodeled with all new rocking chair seats, upgraded sound systems, and new state-of-the-art digital projection. The additional screens in the market will allow Malco to offer a wide range of independent, foreign, and smaller films that it was not previously able to show in Oxford. Also, the digital projection systems will enable Malco to show concerts, operas, livetheatre, and sporting events. The theatre portion of the project will open by Labor Day. When completed next year, the total theatre/bowling/family entertainment center will employ approximately 100 people. This will be Malco’s second Family Entertainment Center, joining the recently opened Premier Lanes and Family Entertainment Center in Gonzales, LA. “Malco is very excited about bringing a second state of the art, all digital cinema and family entertainment center to the Oxford community. The end product will be something the community will be very proud to have and enjoy for many years to come”, said Jimmy Tashie, Executive VP of Theatre Operations.

I always wondered what the hell it was doing over there, but I didn't hate it. I took HWY 7 north to the house I rented on 30 and would stop there often.

This project sounds pretty cool.

Y'all take the Sisk Ave exit and go check out the new HS. I've never seen anything like it. Biggest and nicest in the state for sure.

That area is going to be something else once all this is completed

Not trying to be an a-hole....but are these really the only possible restaurants that are going into this development? That's like a who's who of disgusting chain restaurants.

But seriously, that part of town is about to grow and FAST. There are so many proposed projects out there it's ridiculous. Oxford in 10 years is going to be almost unrecognizable.

No it said it be a variety of fast food, casual, and fine dining. The reason those shitty restaurants were mentioned was because they are the large chains more than likely coming. It will be the commercial area of Oxford though so lots of chains but on the new square it will be local restaurants just like it is on the historic square

It's a totally new area. So if you don't got there it will he just like Oxford has been aside from the development on East Jackson.

They should have the double decker buses run between to the two for transportation.

Noticed the article was written in 05. Did they decide to go through with the same development again. Also heard they are building a Marriott between campus and the square on Jackson Ave.

I thought it was kind of weird because the "outdoor" theatre has already been tried over there and it failed. :D

Malco did just buy the theater and has redone it. It is supposed to open back up soon.

They said this 10 years ago. I remember being there as a student and thinking it was going to be great. I will just say I will believe it when I see it.
