Does Ole Miss have a similar statement? It's up to the professor on what to do here, but I have to imagine that if they would send them to that play in the first place they won't be happy with it
quote:
The University of Alabama values the diversity of its student body and is committed to providing a classroom atmosphere that encourages the equitable participation of all students. Patterns of interaction between the faculty member and students and among the students themselves may inadvertently communicate preconceptions about (or the essentializing of) student abilities based on ability, age, class, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, nationalities/national origins, race, religion, regionalism, and/or sexuality. These patterns are due in part to the differences the students themselves bring to the classroom; however students and instructors must attend to potential devaluation of students that can occur by reference to demeaning stereotypes of any particular group or overlooking the contributions of any particular group to the topic under discussion. Joking at the expense of any particular group creates an inhospitable environment and is inappropriate.
Instructors and students should be particularly sensitive to being equitable in the opportunities they provide students to answer questions in class, to contribute their own ideas, and to participate fully in projects in and outside of the classroom. Moreover, in providing evaluations of students, it is essential that instructors and students avoid distorting these evaluations based on preconceived notions/expectations about the intellectual capacities of any group.
