I'm not sure what part of 17-20 at Louisiana Tech, including 4-8 in his last year (Their toughest opponent that year was Boise, the rest of their schedule was quite mediocre to bad), would make anyone think he'd be good. My LaTech father was stumped when Tennessee hired him away.
