It absolutely is not irrelevant. It is a major NC awarder and has been for decades. Not winning it results in a split NC and a * on the season and record books.

You do realize why the AP removed itself from the BCS calculations don't you?
They are absolutely relevant, saying otherwise displays an ignorance about the college game.

ask USC how irrelevant it is. They have half of one of LSU's championships by finishing first in the AP. Their national championship award is still considered a legit title and probably will be for a long time to come.
