I wouldn't say Texas cares more about academics than athletics but I would agree they care more about academics than Bama. Texas is more like UF or Ohio State or Michigan, they want to be good at both. They aren't Cal Berkeley or UVA.

Texas realizes the revenue and exposure that comes from athletics is a huge boost to the school and thus it is certainly a major priority. I do think they focus too much on the revenue though over winning and that is biting them in the arse now.

One last point, the new playoff structure hurts a school like Texas. If they do not go undefeated they have no chance of getting in whereas an SEC school with 1 loss has a very good chance. There are even scenarios where Texas could go undefeated and still not get in (if the 4 other Majors all had undefeated teams because they have stronger conferences and a Championship game). If you look forward the Big 12 is a huge anchor on Texas and their future options aren't very good outside of a Big 12/ACC merger.
