Why wouldn't anyone go back to school? Wouldn't that make them more comfortable? To be surrounded by supportive friends, teamates, and coaches?
Did Archie befriend 5 yr olds battling cancer and spend hours at a time visiting for dinner and just hanging out to play with toys?

Yea I'd feel great leaving my single mom with no way to work back home.
