It's a little bit of both. I do feel like a lot of the sound does escape from the stadium. I think it has to do with the structure.
Really if you think about it, all of the 100,000+ stadiums are really not known for being the loudest in America. It's kinda weird.

It's because the lower bowl bends out so far from the field. Stadiums where those seats run parallel to the field tend to generate more noise.

Not to hijack, I really do think Tiger Stadium will be one of the exceptions here. Bowling in the SEZ will just trap sound there that otherwise would go out.
I will ad to the thread that Tide fans -can- be very polite and considerate if they don't believe your team is a threat. Which I'm not sure they do regarding Ole Miss.
Noise...I'm going to chime in with some others and say the pom poms negatively affect the noise level. Not flaming, being serious here. Most Tide fans don't make a lot of noise when they are shaking those things.
