I always wondered where the cheer came from since it sounded so similar to "Hotty Toddy." So, I googled it and came up with an article written for tuscaloosanews.com. Here it is

Rammer Jammer

The Rammer Jammer cheer actually didn't appear until around 1982, said Kathleen Cramer, then the UA cheerleading sponsor and now associate vice president at UA's office of student affairs.

Cheerleaders composed the cheer/sas they rode back from an Alabama victory over Ole Miss in the early 1980s. The tune to Rammer Jammer was taken from an Ole Miss cheer.

"We made it up after an Ole Miss trip because they had some cheers that were uniquely theirs," Cramer said.

"It was patterned after that. We wanted to incorporate old cheers, as well as things particular to this state. And it was immediately popular."

They then discussed different state symbols to use in the cheer, such as the state flower (Camellia), but eventually settled on the state bird, Yellow hammer, because it rhymed with Rammer Jammer.

Creative bunch there.

Bama actually started using the "musical version" in 1980 and it was indeed copied from Hotty Toddy.

I don't mind that y'all copied it. The thing that is gay is every now and then I've had Bama fans say how we copied HT from RJ, and act arrogant about it.

It's pretty funny when I prove them wrong, but they always deflect to "well we do it better"

Very informative.

I found this about the magazine:

quote:

. Before it became a rallying cry and part of a title for a best-selling book, Rammer Jammer was The University of Alabama's celebrated humor and literary magazine. Published between 1924 and 1956, the Rammer Jammer captured a spirit and pride in The University of Alabama through jokes, articles, cartoons and photographs.

This is wrong.
"Rammer Jammer, Yellow Hammer, Give em Hell Alabama"
Is a very old cheer. Older even than me. It used to be a chant done throughout the game. Then sometime after 1975 it was decided that you couldn't cuss in cheers. The current "Rammer Jammer" done at the end of games started maybe as this article discussed, but the Rammer Jammer part is old. We also used to chant Hey (inserts name of opposing school) and repeat then "we're GONNA beat the hell outa you.

I can't stand it and I wish we'd stop doing it. It sounds ridiculous when we do it after a close win, and it doesn't represent the class we aspire towards at any point.

That said, I look forward to singing it 12 more times this year.

I don't always like doing it. For instance last week we didn't beat the hell out of anyone. However last two BCSCG we did and I enjoyed it very much.
