This. A white helmet, when nothing else is white, looks terrible imo.

The Halloween costume was just that a Halloween costume. It was done at the last moment when it was realized we were playing on Halloween. It was one of the few good decisions Kiffin made because it was reminiscent of the Halloween Jack'O'Lanterns and served as a treat for the kids. However it was such a last minute decision we actually had to scramble to have the Jersey produced locally.

As for Smokey Grey, I don't think it looks bad at all with the white. It was a promise CBJ made to the players and kept -- the player's coaches (elected by teammates) also got to decide a lot of things about it. So it's really something that was by them and for them.

It's also a 1 game thing and not worth the trouble of producing a helmet for. Finally, when the additional white accents are added as per the more complete uni it looks better:

Also, when the uni was officially unveiled the shoes ended up being gray with orange and white flashes. The helmet doesn't look so out of place with the white elements are added.

One other thing, if we choose to go with the white sleeves showing orange checkboards or even more white bands it likely help the overall look.
