My post-overreaction Analysis

After the game Saturday, as was the case with the majority of us, I was worried for the season. The offense looked like hot garbage and looking at the 21-3 lights on the scoreboard it was hard to see any sort of positive in the outcome.
After much reflection on the game, I offer a different opinion.
To start on a positive note, and one we pretty much all agree on, the defense was outstanding. Yes, we gave up over 200 yards rushing, but we also only allowed 21 points to one of the most dominant offensive teams for the better half of the past decade. After the first quarter they had less than 40 yards of total offense, and our offense had shouldered a large portion of what the defense had accomplished, staying on the field for more than 2/3rds of the first quarter. (NOTE: If the offense would have had continued success, you're looking at giving up less than 150-200 total yards for the entire game) Obviously they didn't and we saw our defense get tired as the game wore on, 3 and out after 3 and out.
Here's where the differing opinions begin, and I encourage feedback from each of you on my assessment.
Our offense was putrid. This we all understand, even the football fans ignorant of X's and O's could see. However, as dismal as the offense was during the game I believe that having this exposed in the first game of the season, could possibly turn into the best "worst case scenario" possible for the success of the team moving forward this season.
Had we played a Jackson State, Alcorn State, or Memphis team, we would have employed the same "conservative", "ease the freshman in the game" playbook that you saw in the OSU game with a dominating victory. This would have given us a win no doubt, but would have disguised the glaring problems we have seen for more than 6 games. Playing 4 non-conference cupcakes at the beginning of our schedule would have allowed us to slowly incorporate plays and get complacent in thinking that we are close to where we need to be.
Moving forward, as Dan often recognized in the press conference, shots down the field have to be taken and the conservative "don't lose" approach has to be scratched. Now, we must open the playbook, get aggressive, and refine the previously mentioned aggressive attack needed to win in November.
This begs the question, as so many of you have lamented, "What leads me to believe that anything will change after week 1, that wasn't promised to change in the off-season?" For that question, I provide you with this answer to mull over. At the end of a season, maybe the thought of "hanging in there" or "weathering the storm" trickles into the back of a coaches mind. When you get completely dominated week 1 of a season and see 11 more weeks of the same flash before you, I believe that this will cause a change in conservative mindset we all LOATHE. It is now readily apparent that the coaches must become more aggressive, or stare down the barrel of the same feeling in the pit of their stomachs for at least 8 more games.
No matter your opinion of our offensive coaching staff, urgency does not come in the form of complacency but rather by feeling a little heat under your seat. Maybe now we will see the fire return to Mullen's face, in-game, that we saw in 2009. Maybe now we will see a chip on the shoulder of our players that we saw in 2010. We are 0-1, not 7-0 feeling on top of the world. This, in my opinion, will bring back what we all want to see.

Great post. I'll show you where I disagree.
Maybe occasionally but they aren't that necessary. Short routes that don't take forever to develop would be much more useful
Also, I don't feel like they will learn anything about the offense because of this game. They obviously didn't learn anything from facing decent teams in the second half of last season. Why should the staff wake up now?
They didn't change last season or the year before when it was evident. Why change now?

I see more fail in our immediate future, dropping at least one game to an opponent we should have beat easily. They knew the offense sucked last year and did nothing about it.
Changes need to be made.
Your analysis is what I'd expect. But I think it's perfectly okay for us as a fan base to not be happy about what's going on with this program.

I agree on the short routes, the article by Matt Wyatt goes into more detail in addition to exactly what you are pointing out. If you can't read it I'll try to post the whole thing. Its a great read and its short and to the point.

To address this, which I also agree with, I hope this is why.

I have wanted Mullen's seat to be warm since the TAMU game last year. I know nothing will change until Mullen feels criticism up close and personal. I can't believe it has come to this but needs to feel some heat

You're absolutely right. We should not be at all happy about what's going on, and I think the outcry from the fan base will only add more urgency to the situation and make it a necessity to change.

The thing that angers me is that we have defensive talent which is infinitely harder to acquire than offensive. There are plenty of coaches we could bring in that would have been able to put up points and win that game against OSU. Hell, Kliff Kingsbury just plugged in a walk on freshman QB at Texas Tech and put up 40 points. We completely squandered a good defensive performance.
If we had a competent offense they probably would have been held to 14 points.

I think that our fans have made it readily apparent that he better get his shite straight. Hud is waiting in the wings, which is motivation in of itself, because from what I've heard Mullen and company didn't think real highly of him. Which is fricking stupid. His best offensive years were with Hud at the helm.

Absolutely. I share this same sentiment.

Could you imagine the coverage we would have gotten if we would have completely stomped out their offense in a win?

Exactly. Our offense just never looks prepared. Even against shitty defense, it doesn't look impressive. I hope there is change, but I just don't see how it's possible.

It really is silly. We could just go grab Troy's offensive coordinator and have a much improved offense.

It sounds stupid but that's how I feel. This is the third year I have felt that way.

Yeah, the offense has been terrible since Hud left. It does not take a lot of highly ranked recruits to have a good offense. Mullen has no excuse.

We still have kenning so our offense will still suck.

I don't understand blaming it on Koenning. He's a puppet.

Our offensive stats were interesting.
150 yds in the first qtr.
50 yds total in the middle 2 qts.
130 yds in the 4th qtr.
The 2 end points are interesting. Manage that for 4 qtrs, and you have 560 yards.
When we drove the ball well, we self-destructed at the end of those drives. On the first drive we "made" a first down at the 8 only to have that called back because of a holding call. I didn't see any replay, but from my seat, it was unnecessary and didn't affect the play. After the long kick return... where a blocker just ran past the man that made the tackle... we just went short-bus-stupid on play calling and penalties. Some of that is on the coaches, but a lot of it was caused by the players.

Collins is balling out with the D. The first drive of most games seem to look good to me. Then we just go to shite. I think Dan makes Koenning the puppet for these plays. Then Koenning gets to start his play calling. Also, the offensive mistakes and penalties are Koenning 100% IMO. He should have them better prepared. I feel like a good O.C. would fix all these things.

A good offensive system and play calling can mask weak talent, we have decent talent and shite else on offense. Our defense is pretty talented, ESP up front and seems to have a much better outlook this year.

Dude I just 100% disagree with you here. Our skill positions are stacked with talent, we just can't keep people out of the backfield for long enough to get them the ball.
Looking at you offensive line.
