Every other segment is about Clowney. No kid can live up to that much hype. He is a very special player, but he is blockable. He makes mistakes, mentally and technically. The best defensive player ever? Not even close. Not yet at least.

This is how people felt about Honey Badger as well.

eh, mathieu didn't start to garner national hype like clowney has until a few games into the season. and no one tabbed him as the best defensive player at his position ever, just an amazing playmaker. there were still plenty of people that thought he was overrated. he may have been overhyped, but it wasn't exactly the same. he was also on the #1 team in the country and making game changing plays almost every game.

I don't think the level of hype are near the same.

I can see why. Mathieu wasn't ever considered the greatest at his position. Not even close. I think Clowney could be a once in a generation player, but his #'s don't show that, not yet at least. Would have liked to see Clowney play before the spread became popular. He may have set some records against the traditional pro set offenses.

There's a laundry list of college FB players ESPN has done this with. They love to put 'em on top of the world and then document the downfall and/or not living up to the unrealistic hype/expectations that THEY put on them. Just off the top of my head:

Reggie Bush (NCAA investigation, not as good in NFL)
Vince Young (didn't dominate NFL, went crazy for a bit there)
Tebow (from the draft up through his continuing NFL saga)
Tyrann Mathieu (drug issues)
JFF (partying, NCAA investigation)
Clowney (we'll see...)

Feel free to add to the list. ESPN has turned to shite. It's better to be in the Russell Wilson/Teddy Bridgewater scenario. Talked about but not hyped.
