So apparently AJ Derby is our backup QB. If I'm not mistaken, this was the guy drunkenly punching out windows in Iowa City a few years ago. Is this kid actually a hard worker that won this job or is Bielema a hopeless romantic wearing Hawkeye colored glasses? Hopefully it is the first one because I haven't been paying attention to the Hawkeyes in recent years (and likely neither have yall) but we better not start picking up all their sloppy seconds if we want to compete in this league

Derby's father has a relationship with BB (think they played together)

His completion percentage from JUCO is all that needs to be said about AJ and we are really in trouble if he has to take any snaps

HawgAlude your trying to hard. Have you not learned to use something totally different than you original SN when creating an alter?

I am all for offering kids a second chance if they can play.

Hell I wanted every sorority to offer Ms Delaware. Forgiveness is not my issue. I am worried about if he is actually the second-best option at QB

who would be our backup if not Derby? brandon mitchell left. buehner was switched to WR.

brandon allen is here for two more years at least, and most likely 3 more years. no reason to burn a true freshman's redshirt.

8 Austin Allen QB 6-1 200 Fr. Fayetteville, Ark.
10 Brandon Allen QB 6-3 210 So. 1L Fayetteville, Ark.
11 AJ Derby QB 6-5 240 Jr. TR Iowa City, Iowa (Coffeyville CC) (City HS)
7 Damon Mitchell QB 6-2 200 Fr. HS Egg Harbor City, N.J. (Cedar Creek HS)

So on the roster, only 4 QBs are listed, 3 of them recruited by Bert, 2 of them are true freshmen, and you are saying AJ Derby was giving preferential treatment and didn't earn the back up QB spot.

OK.

I guess I am just concerned that he is far from a known commodity and hasn't really received a lot of pub thus far. I don't want to hand the keys of the benz to the intern who started yesterday

we don't have any known commodities on the team, including the starter.

Derby was highly recruited out of HS, so who knows.

There is a serious drop off from Brandon Allen to Derby. I was looking at my phone during the scrimmage on one play and hadn't noticed that they had subbed Derby in for Allen. I remember thinking that Allen had just went crazy, because he was tearing shite up and now all of a sudden he is doing a bunch of dumb shite. I didn't realize until later that it was AJ Derby who was making a lot of WTF decisions. We will get our shite kicked in if Derby is the quarterback against a legit team.

More likely than both of those scenarios, he's the best option available because our quality QB depth is nonexistent.

Here is how I look at it:

Derby seemed to win the job quietly yet hands down. Yet I didn't hear a lot of praise of him coming from the team nor Bielema. And, Buehner (who is a somewhat known commodity) not only lost the quiet battle but moved to a position he will never see the field at.

Don't get me wrong, I hope the kid has turned over a new leaf and excels. It just seemed like a story that hasn't been mentioned. Given his history, I would think his 'redemption' would be a popular tale

Buehner is nothing more than a GA in training. Always has been.

I truly think that if Brandon goes down, we will get a little bit of AJ, then a lot of Austin. I think Austin will be more of an option as a backup as the season progresses.

I'm expecting Duwop will get a specific package to run perhaps read option or something along those lines. When we use it or if we will is anyone's guess.

This is what I suspect too. I would put "OR Austin Allen" on the depth chart in that case though

Not so much right now. I think as Austin gets more experience he will slide in front of him. AJ is just too hot and cold. I know I've made it sound like he is total dogshit, but that's not entirely true. He has the ability to make great decisions, but he is just too inconsistent. His deep ball isn't very good either, he let's it hang up there too long. I just think he would have more interceptions than touchdown passes, and the coaches would have to lean entirely on the running game or give Austin/Duwop a shot.
