They used to because we'd try to troll the hell out of them and it'd never show up 
You're probably right though with how big the site has gotten it's probably easier for them to just delete comments instead of approve them now.
Cheese the site I worked with was "based" somewhere else. Admins were UK folks from all over. It started as a small site then merged with another then split again. It no longer exists now.

Yeah, it used to be moderated, but it isn't anymore. There's just too much traffic now. They read through the comments and delete the ones that they don't like eventually.
