Adjustments being made by the coaching staff

I know the coaching staff still makes stupid decisions, but they're making some positive changes I like that we hadn't done in previous years:
1. I know nobody is impressed that we still haven't improved in recruiting as far as the quality of the players go, but I do see adjustments being made that I like. In previous recruiting classes we had 25 available scholarships but sometimes would only use 15-18 of the allotted amount not realizing this hurt the depth of the team. I think the coaching staff is realizing they have to sign a full 25 man class for depth purposes and hope of getting more quality players. Our recruiting classes haven't been terrible every year if you look back, but recently when we've stuck to 15-18 man classes and players fail to qualify (i.e. Chase Abbinton
, Antar Thompson, Sheldon Richardson (2years to get here), etc) and we have players getting kicked off the team for doing stupid stuff (i.e. (drugs (Ka'ra Stewart, Bozer, Hollifield) it eliminates some of the most promising players in the previous recruiting classes. I mean we're in July and we already have 16 commitments (an entire class in previous years). If we can start out the season 5-0 and give recruits something to talk about then maybe we pick up some more highly recruited players and bring in a full recruiting class.
2. Making adjustments to the passing game and instead of sending 5WR out and only 5 men to block with a unhealthy line was idiotic. It's nice to see them using the tight-end to block on the line more and leaving the RB in the backfield to help with pass protection. Henry Josey should help slow down defenses too with the threat of running the option, and his ability to actually get in the open field something we we're missing last year.
3. The offensive and defensive lines are getting big every where you look on the line you see 6'5 320 pound offensive lineman, and the defensive line is bigger this year too.

To pile on to what you said:
- Pinkel said a few days at ESPN that he is getting rid of two-a-days and some tackling drills in an effort to allow players to recover more. This should hopefully cut down on injuries.
- Henson has stated that there will less of the horizontal running plays you saw with Yost.
- I also agree that he is taking on more players, not only to create depth, but to also get Mizzou's brand in the Southeast high schools. You've seen already after Nate Crawford committed, two other players from his high school committed this year.

Looking back at it, the answer is really pretty simple. Mizzou has had the most success with 5* athletes, so that is all we should recruit now. Sure we have put some 2* athletes into the NFL, but if you go by success rate, it's hard to beat 100%. As far as I can recall, we've had 3. Gabbert, Richardson and DGB. 2 of which are in the NFL and one that will be shortly.

I don't know much about the new OC or Mizzou players. Will Mizzou still be more of a spread team or will they use power running like LSU. I know Mizzou have some good RB's. I read #3 about the offensive line getting bigger. Is that a sign for having more of a running style offense?

Our new OC< Josh Henson, previously was on Les Miles staff at LSU. I think he's making plans to modify our offense. We will still be a spread team, but with more of a power running option. There will be fewer lateral running plays - they'll be more downhill instead. And there will be fewer of the 5 WR sets; they'll generally keep a blocker in the backfield. The TEs will continue to be receivers, but incorporate more traditional TD blocking as well. That may be why Sean Culkin is now the starting TE. He's 6'6", 245 - I saw him a few weeks ago in the grocery store, and he looks huge.
So, basically, you'll see a little less finesse and a little more physicality from our offense under Henson. That's what I've pieced together anyway.

Good to hear. Was wondering if Mizzou was going to try to have the same style as last year. What hurt Mizzou last year was the injuries. When you have SEC coaches saying that then that lets me know people respect Mizzou no matter what SEC rant fans say about Mizzou.

I think you're probably right. We were killed by injuries last season - any team that lost 70% of their OL 2-deep would be hurting. Add the injured QB and RB who missed the entire season, and you see the issues. We're better than we showed last season, but how much better remains to be seen.

If given the time I suspect the OC will attempt to move more toward an offense style that uses more clock. I doubt he will toss what you do well but you have likely noticed he is changing the body types of his players a bit.
The point behind eating more clock is to allow the defense recovery time so they don't get worn down by late in the 2nd half. For all of the discussions about the HUNH style of play taking over to equalize things, this is still a line of scrimage league and you beter be able to stand your ground on the D front.

Good points, T Rey. I think Henson is adding some things to the offense this year that (hopefully) will do this.

Welcom TRey!
That was a huge problem for us last year. Though our problem wasn't scoring too fast. Turnovers and 3 and outs killed our defense by the 4th quarter. And yes, the body types are different this year from what I can tell.

Thinking further about T Rey's comments, something occurred to me. Henson is changing the body types of the linemen, and adding a power running option. That sounds a bit like Alabama's offense, does it not? They have power running, and mix it up with some really fast, athletic receivers. Bama's defense is very different from ours though. So, if we were to, by some miracle, hire Kirby Smart...we'd already be a step toward what he would want to run, with our offense developing in that direction. And Henson could end up still being the OC. Just food for thought!

I'd say we're a step closer to it, but not just like Bama. I don't think we've got the type of backs to quite do it the same way. I am excited that it will be more north/south though.

No, we won't be Alabama, we don't have the right personnel for that nor is what what we do well right now. But, it's a step closer.
Whenever you consider a new coach, you know they're going to change some things up. Different systems, personnel, assistants, etc. IF we were to hire a Kirby Smart, or a TIm DeRueyter, they are defensive specialists - they'll want an offense that compliments the defensive system. We're moving closer to an offense for a line of scrimmage league. That's all I meant.

I'm following ya. I went back and re-read it. I think my brain went dead after the first half and stopped comprehending after that.
On re-reading it, the second half set in and I followed.

SemoTruman hit this one on the nail. Mizzou will try to control the clock more.
I expect Henson to perform well as your OC.

System wise I think we can look more towards Oklahoma and expect it to be somewhat like that. Still a spread but with more IFormations and TE's actually blocking on the line. Henson is also officially the TE's coach now. Before that was Any Hills over seeing. Having Henson coach that position will make a difference. I like the moves we made this year. Just hoping its not a year too late.

Wasn't Henson at Oklahoma before LSU? It was either Okie or Okie Lite.
And that is the kind of blend I'm talking about.

He was at Oklahoma State with Les Miles and followed Miles to LSU.
