There is no reason to go to a 9 game schedule when the SEC is already the most dominant in college football when considering strength of schedule. It would help, but only because it could not hurt. As it stands, an 8 game SEC schedule is harder than a 9 game schedule in any other conference.

It hurts in the sense that it may add a crappy team as the 9th game (ie. Auburn 2012 or kentucky 2012) to the schedule. Does that help the SOS? Absolutely not.

It also hurts in the sense that it encourages more rematches in the SECCG.

If a team wins in the regular season and wins again in the SECCG, then they actually hurt their strength of schedule with the win. That was one of the factors that cost Auburn in 2004 (beating Tennessee twice who was their best win on the season).
