Excellent point. Clearly, without a QB in 2004 we were destined for a down year. However, the 2005-2007 teams at LSU were loaded with talent. Who knows what Saban could have done with that? Maybe LSU would have won 3 in 4. Or maybe even 4 in 5.
The 06 and 07 teams were as talented as any LSU has had. Saban would have gone back to back those years, and might not have lost a game doing it. Goober Pyle, I mean Les Miles, was able to win the NC with that talent in 07 so there's no reason to think Saban would have done differently.

The 2004 LSU and 2010 Bama teams had a lot in common. At Bama he's had his program grow up and learn how to handle that ultimate success in the following years. He didn't take the opportunity to do the same thing at LSU.
Lord only knows what happens at LSU in 2005-2007 if Saban had stayed.
That said, The crazy arse, high strung LSU version of Saban could easily have completely lost his team during the Katrina year. That would have been the ultimate wild-card and would have been very interesting to see Saban handle.
