Spring Game

That was an entertaining Spring Game. Several good things were shown on offense and defense.
Some of my thought:
-Chaz Elder is going to get some PT next year. He was around the ball more often than not, and almost had 2 INT's bring down 1.
-I'm not as nervous about LB as I was, although our rushing defense didn't look great.
-Our rushing offense looked awesome, I've fine with either Davis or Wilds getting carries.
-We have actual quality depth at QB. Mitch and Nos both hit nice passes. Nos actually looked better to me, but he's a year older.
-We used TE passes almost every series, and it worked. We are extremely deep with talent at that position. I really liked the double TE sets we did, those guys are some of our best playmakers and getting Adams and Buster on the field at the same time will create so many mismatches for LB's and Safety's.
-Hamptons rolling on the ground after slipping was funny.
-Clowney scored a NFL TD, but wasn't even dressed for the game, b/c he's that good.
-Jody Fuller...really lines up twice in a row as ineligible?!?! That is going to make it harder for him to crack that 2 deep.
-Not a lot of false starts or offside penalties called, so I'm hoping that means there weren't many.
-Probably the best spring game from the OL that I can remember. Our QB's had time to pass on 90% of the snaps.
-WR overall did a great job of getting open, but the QB's also weren't afraid to thread the needle on several plays...AND IT WORKED!
-Mason Harris, Dixon Jr and Deon Greene made nice plays on the DL, we obviously have depth.

Yeah, I agree.
I just got back from the game, sunburned. But it was a fun game - fwiw.
We sure look to have plenty of depth and talent on both sides of the ball. I think part of the issue with the DLine is it appeared to me that they were being reigned-in a bit after penetration. Half speed behind the line of scrimmage.
I like Green and English both on the DLine. And I think Mason Harris is a sleeper type talent. I don't know much about him but boy he looked talented today. He has good moves and a ton of speed off that end. I could actually see them using him in a LB roll as well. He's just a very talented kid.
We're plenty deep at WR and RB, that's for sure. Kwinton Smith just looks like a stud out there. He is TE size at WR ... and runs like a WR. Did you see the size of that kid's thighs? He looks like a DE at WR almost, or like I said a TE, but he runs like a deer. He is gonna be a big time threat.
You're right, we've got some TEs - Adams has got to be going 6-6 250 and Buster looks like he has gained a lot of weight as well. Both of those guys can motion wide and make for some serious match-up problems as big and fast as they are for TEs.
Man our OLine is huge.
I agree about our LBs as well. I thought they looked pretty good - bigger than in the past and still fast.
I've been saying it but I'm going to keep preaching it ... Victor Hampton and Chaz Sutton are both going to have big years. Those two guys will play on Sunday after this coming season because Hampton is going to leave early.
Dylan Thompson ... we're gonna see a lot of him this season. He is gonna play a lot. The guy is just a natural big time QB and maybe our best passing QB since, I dunno, probably since Tanneyhill. Although Shaw is certainly no slouch throwing the ball. But I agree, Nosovich and Connor Mitch are good looking prospects for the future. Both of them seem to be big time QB talent. Mitch will redshirt this year, of course, but it would not surprise me to see Nosovich get as much mop-up duty as they can afford. He sure can make all the throws - and he throws a pretty pass.
I like Mike Davis and I can see why he's gotta be penciled-in as the starter right now over Wilds. But Wilds is still a big time RB and he has got to be going 225 or so - wouldn't you guess? I mean he just looks the part and sure does seem to have gained some speed while sitting out last year. But heck, I liked Kendrick Salley too. He's a good looking back.
And yep, Chaz Elder looks like another in the long line of big time DBs at Carolina. He's got a natural nose for the ball.
Last thing - I thought Shaq Roland looked a lot more comfortable today and I'm thinking Shamere Jefferey may be thinking transfer ... I don't know why, can't put a finger on it, and I'm probably wrong but it just seems like we're so loaded at WR he is going to have a tough time making the cut come this Fall.
PS: Oh, and great crowd today. I figure there had to be 35-40k in attendance. Sort of hard to tell but East and West lowers were pretty full and South Endzone appeared to be about two thirds full.
It was hot - I got sunburned.

I read both of yall's observations.
I was thinking the same thing watching the G-Day game last weekend.
I was really impressed by the young DL.
But then I was wondering if if wasn't that the DL was awesome, but maybe the OL wasn't up to snuff.
What's your opinion on that subject, regarding your own team, and what you saw today?

Spring games are always tough sources to gain much perspective on players. Perhaps more so with spring games under Spurrier than other spring games: you have cases where top players/units are split up between teams for the game; walk-ons and players that might not even see the field during the season get major snap reps; and many of the upper-classmen who would be stars sit the game out.
Main thing you hope to see is the younger players executing the plays well, which IMO we saw that everywhere on the field from both sides. I think overall it was a pretty solid spring game in that regard...
Saying that, regardless of how our defense will play in 2013, I think our DL should be the strength of the defense. Clowney goes without saying, but we're also returning Quarles which is a top DT in the SEC, plus veteran DE Sutton and DT Surratt who have started games and have substantial experience. Plus we'll have back-ups in Dixon Jr., English, Dukes, Green, etc....

Good answer.
That's sort of how I felt about watching our spring game.
The veteran talent was split up, alot of nonames in there for reps.
There is no reason Carolina's DL won't be the best in all of college football next year.
The OL too.... noone talkes about your OL, but they are veteran beasts that know their role.
Shaw/Douglas/Davis/Wilds are going to have several field days against many teams this year, I just hope it isn't us.

Douglas? Let me think, who I am forgetting named Douglas?
But anyways, we're looking at:
QB - Shaw, Thompson, Nosovitch
RB - Davis, Wilds, Carson, Salley, Williams
He did not play yesterday, but honestly and if he can stay healthy Shon Carson is the most dangerous RB on our depth chart. He's playing baseball right now but he would have been Lattimore's replacement last year had he not broken that wrist-bone in the preseason.
It is hard to tell about things in Spring Games. I remember several times when the MVP of the Spring would end-up never playing or even, once not too long ago when Holtz was here, he ended-up transferring before Summer practice had concluded.
What I look for is ability, execution, first step and how fluid they appear to be, if they are making it look easy or not. Jerel Adams, Kwinton Smith, Mason Harris and a few others struck me that way yesterday. Kwinton Smith especially - I just have a feeling he is going to be an exceptional player. I mean I know they list him at 6'4" 200 but that kid is more like 6-4 225 and he is really a football player.
Tell ya who else I liked a lot was that fullback, can't remember his name at the moment but #41, white kid, tough as nails. I doubt he'll get any carries this season but man-oh-man is he physical and appears to really dig the contact.
I thought the LB, #11, Holloman I think, he's a player. He has a real nose for the ball.
Who were wearing #1 and #10 yesterday? Anyone know? A couple of DBs and both of them looked smooth to me - like they have potential to be big time talents. They were not playing Byrd at DB were they? Because the #1 I saw in the secondary looked bigger and taller than Byrd.
We really need to have the light come-on for some of the young LBs and for Kelvin Rainey.
And someone correct me if I am wrong but our OLine looked big, and I recognized a lot of numbers and names and they sure look like they have matured from last year - but we are not going to have a single SR on that OLine this coming year? I'm not really worried about it because there is so much experience returning, and size and talent ... but we're still going to be very young in that regard. I'm not sure how many more talented lines there are going to be in the conference this year, I dunno, maybe all of them. But I seriously doubt there will be a bigger offensive line in the league. I'd venture a guess to say we're going to average 6'6"ish 330 along the OLine this year. And they looked pretty good ... time will tell.

#1 is Rico McWilliams, and #10 is Ronnie Martin. I don't think Rico was supposed to be playing though, so that might have been one of the walk-ons.

Not from what I saw.

Ronald Patrick is the only Sr and starts at RG.
19 Total OL, 5 Jr's (4 in the 2 deep), 4 Soph's (2 in the 2 deep), 4 RS Fr (3 in the 2 deep.) Then we have 4 highly recruited guy coming in (and Park is one of them and already here this spring.) OLine is going to have serious talent to use over the next 4 years.

I brainfarted Douglas, meant Thompson.
Yes, your OL is going to be spectacular. Even though they aren't seniors, there is alot of playing time there, and your OL coach is one of the best.
I know it sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but I'm not. I looked around at many other SEC OL's coming into 2013, and SC and UGA will have the best.

I dunno ... I expect UT's to be pretty darn good this year.
