This is what the rivalry really is, right? Which are really better?

Well, for many years South Carolina has produced more peaches than Georgia. However, I believe that we turned down calling ourselves the Peach State b/c there was also enough testosterone production in SC as well.

Yall have better peaches, and apples.

The cool thing is you can actually buy fresh preshed cider in SC, it's illegal in GA. Everything must be pasteurized here, which cooks it and ruins it. Yalls stuff is pulpy and right off the press, if you don't drink it in a week it starts fermenting. I love it. I get my fix from Mountain Rest every fall.

One gallon for drinking, one for fermenting into hard cider, and one for mulling with whiskey.

I wish Georgia didn't have food-nazi's in the department of ag.

Back to peaches, I've heard that the reason SC's peaches are better is because GA exports most of theirs, which means they ship before they are fully ripe, for obvious reasons, to accommodate the logistical problem. Therefore, at a peach stand in Georgia, your peach probably isn't ripe. So you let it ripen on the counter. It doesn't taste the same as when it's allowed to ripen on the tree, which is more commmon in SC. But that might all be BS, it's just what I've heard before.

I heard that Georgia peaches taste a lot different because of the amount of red clay in Georgia.

Wonder what a fresh California peach tastes like. I bet it tastes funny.

Where the peach orchards are, there isn't much red clay. It's similar to the SC piedmont and coastal plains. Below the fall line so you don't have to be too concerned about a late frost.

Edgefield County peaches are the best. Johnston is the Peach Capital of the World for a reason.

The Peach Museum is also in Johnston

I know some claim McBee peaches are the best - I disagree, but they are close right behind Johnston.

Gaffney peaches are good too.
