It wasn't called USoCar, back then, though, was it?

Nope, South Carolina College.

We went through a lot of names. The university has actually had a pretty troubled history. We went from one of the best universities in the South (and probably would rival a place like UNC-Chapel Hill today if it weren't for the Civil War) in the early 19th century to a Radical Reconstruction-ruined mess then back to a decent university.

I think our names went in this order:

South Carolina College (1801 until the Civil War)
University of South Carolina (during Reconstruction)
South Carolina College of the Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (end of Reconstruction until around 1890)
South Carolina College (around 1890 to around 1905)
University of South Carolina (around 1905 to today)
