Honestly.....

in all honesty. We had no other choice. The only option we had was give it a chance and hope a magic rabbit could've been pulled out of the hat.

At the end of the 2011 season, I wanted a couple minor changes, check my post history it's all in there.

First, Willy Robinson had to go. Dude was good at scheming, but couldn't/wouldn't recruit, didn't relate to the kids very well, just wasn't a good fit for whatever reason. The halftime adjustments seemed to come from Petrino himself. If a DC could adjust as well as the D did at halftime, then it's reasonable to assume that he could make adjustments between series like they should be able to do.

2) JLS needed to be moved into a recruiting/HS relations position. Time had passed him by, there were too damn many fakes on ST that came at really crucial times that we flat out got smoked by, weren't even looking for it, weren't set up for the fake to even be a possibility. I said the return game success was due to the ability of Joe Adams and Dennis Johnson, not JLS coaching.

3) Bobby Allen also needed to be taken off the field, the positions he coached always regressed, they bounced him around and he never got the results we were looking for, It seems like he's a BOT informer through all the coaching changes he survived and the shake ups in staff. It's an anamaly and he's not a good coach imo. Just seemed to be a liasion for the inner politics of the GOBN.

What else could we have done? The players themselves asked for the staff to be kept together, they wanted to try and keep it going, and at the end of the day in a situation like what Jeff Long faced, the players were the most important interest to appease, too bad the old coot only had a quick payday on his mind because of his $40M bankruptcy and didn't give two shits about actually coaching or leading the team. It was enraging seeing how uninvolved he was on the sidelines. simply pathetic.

Promote Petrino, all problems solved. Same thing I posted then, when many Hog posters were defending JLS.

This. What Clothe said was spot on. There were definitely a shite-ton of homers [mostly HV types] who thought that we wouldn't miss a beat.

I'll admit, I thought we would win eight to nine games last year, because I thought that even a moron could coach that team to eight or nine wins. Problem is...a moron would have been an improvement over Johnelle.

Part of the problem was the timing at which Petrino got fired. There was no real option to come in and take the job, so I think Jeff Long made the move both to buy him some time and to make it look like he's not just promoting interim coaches. I would have rather had an interim coach tbh.

Another thing, while I am excited about Bielema, I don't know if he's going to be a better coach than Petrino. Yes Petrino had his faults, but every coach does. Petrino was hands down a top 5 coach in the country. Obviously the jury is still out, but I'm still taking a wait and see approach. That being said, I'm very impressed with what Bielema has done on the recruiting front.
