Can some Catholic explain why you need to "give up" something for lent, rather than "do good" for lent?
I figured it would help the individual and society better if you had a new crop of charity volunteers, rather than a bunch of suppressed folks brooding over not smoking cigarettes out back.

The season of lent is based on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving hence the need to fast or give up something. Many Catholics focus on doing something good as well for a substitute.

1: It isnt just catholics. Catholics are just the only ones who have a special day dedicated to the beginning of lent (Ash Wednesday). Many mainstream protestants (methodists, lutherans, etc.) participare.

2: It represents the 40 days Jesus wandered in the desert and was tempted by Satan, for those who believe in that.
