The group of guys I was with consisted of a demographic that one might see in any group of guys at a Birmingham sports bar – some Alabama fans, some Auburn fans, one or two fans who pull for someone else (in this case, a Tennessee fan). In the aftermath of the Flacco bomb, our jaws still halfway to the floor, a woman in a Ray Lewis jersey in the corner of the restaurant going bonkers, the following words emerged from one of the Bama fans:

“That never happens on Saban’s watch.”

This statement, of course, led to head-nods from the Alabama fans and eye rolls from the non-Alabama fans, which, of course, led to one tense exchange between two buddies (an Alabama fan and the UT fan):

UT Fan: (patronizing) “You really think you can say without a doubt that doesn’t happen on Saban’s watch?”

Alabama Fan: (condescending) “Yeah, I think three national championships in four years can safely say that.”

UT Fan (pissed off): “Oh, so now you’re going to be an a-hole about it?”

quote:

“It actually did happen to him (Saban) once. LSU-Iowa. Some insignificant New Year’s Day Bowl – probably the Outback – in one of his last years at LSU.”

To this, one of my Alabama friends responded: (good-natured) “But that was different, that was a Hail Mary.”

Wow.

Sounds like 1000 conversations right here on the SEC Rant.

It absolutely happened on Saban's watch.

2004 versus Iowa. That was frustrating, but was not anywhere as bad as this:

2002 versus Arkansas. Matt Jones leads Arkansas down the field with 2 plays and completes a TD in the back of the end zone to win the game with no time left. The kicker was, if LSU could have stopped that play, they go to the SEC Championship game. Devastating.

That was in Saban's 3rd year and he was effectively the DB coach at that time.

Look, it happens. The other team makes great plays. Saban can't do everything or guarantee that nothing bad ever happens. Some Bama fans are getting ridiculous.
