The "Goal Line Stand" almost didn't happen. Had Georgia beaten Auburn instead of tying them in '78, 22-22, Georgia at 6-0 would have gone to the Sugar instead of 6-0 Alabama.10-1 Alabama almost went to the Fiesta.

That wouldn't have stopped Alabama from playing Penn State. PSU was Independent in those days and had the pick of the litter when it came to bowl games. Bryant talked Paterno into accepting the Sugar Bowl invitation so it could be a #1 vs. #2 match-up. Had Alabama gone to the Fiesta Bowl the same thing might have happened there, too.

That's not how it went down. Penn State was #1 after Nebraska beat Oklahoma. Paterno wanted to play the highest ranked team. Penn State was all set to go to Miami and play Nebraska until Missouri upset Nebraska the following week. So,with Alabama now #2 Penn State accepted a Sugar Bowl Bid.
